September Pricing Analysis - European Crude

Dated Brent averaged $116.80/bbl in September (+28.4% MoM, +71.9% YoY) as renewed Gulf attacks, Petroline and Libyan disruptions and surging freight pushed European refiners toward short-haul North Sea barrels, lifting Dated vs the Prompt Strip from -$0.415/bbl to +$14.69/bbl while CFDs bull-steepened and WTI Houston's discount to Dated blew out to -$28.15/bbl.

SUMMARY

Dated Brent (GX0000968) averaged $116.80/bbl vs $90.94/bbl in August (+28.4% MoM, +71.9% YoY), but the desk story was physical decoupling from paper: Dated vs the North Sea Prompt Strip moved from -$0.415/bbl (open) to +$14.69/bbl (close) and Dated vs Cash BFOE M2 averaged +$19.19/bbl vs +$4.71/bbl. Renewed Gulf attacks stranded competing Middle East barrels, the mid-month Petroline and Libyan disruptions hit Med refiners, and soaring freight priced out long-haul crude, so European refiners bid the short-haul in-window cargo. Basket diffs to the Strip widened $7.47 to $8.53/bbl in step with Dated; WTI Midland FOB North Sea set Dated at both ends of the month, while Johan Sverdrup re-rated $4.32/bbl against Dated on sour tightness. CFDs bull-steepened with a prompt squeeze at the front, W1-W4 widening from +$0.25 to +$12.64/bbl. WTI Houston's discount to Dated blew out to -$28.15/bbl, yet Midland CIF Rotterdam held +$1.83/bbl over Dated: the arb was open on paper and absorbed by freight. Gulf export recovery trimmed Dated vs M2 from its $28.60 peak to $21.15/bbl, but CFD W1-W2 re-widened to +$5.97/bbl into the close; the front CFDs are where any unwind shows first.

MARKET ACTIVITY

  • CFDs drove the increase: 327 trades vs 189 (vs 1st Month 252, vs 2nd Month 75); Cash BFOE was flat at 140 vs 137; physical cargoes 22 vs 21
  • Physical: WTI Midland accounted for 19 of 22 cargo trades, consistent with Midland setting Dated; Johan Sverdrup 2, Forties 1
  • Participants across all instruments:
    • Bids led by Vitol (99, up from 30 in August), Trafigura 78 (up from 26), TOTSA 73

    • Liquidity providers DV Trading (88) and Dare Global (84) led the sell side, not equity producers

CROSS-MARKET DYNAMICS

  • WTI Houston FOB vs Dated moved from -$2.03/bbl (1-Sep) to -$28.15/bbl (30-Sep); average -$18.46/bbl vs -$7.06/bbl in August, widest -$29.19/bbl (28-Sep)
  • Midland CIF Rotterdam vs Dated held at +$1.83/bbl (August +$1.80): delivered Midland priced at Dated, leaving an implied $20.29/bbl average gap between Houston FOB and Rotterdam CIF absorbed by freight and voyage costs
  • The wider arb did not flood the basket or cheapen Dated; Midland remained marginal at a higher price

CROSS-REGIONAL DYNAMICS

  • EFS M1 averaged +$9.85/bbl vs +$9.05/bbl, peaking at +$11.78/bbl (14-Sep); Brent-linked crude stayed uncompetitive into Asia, keeping Atlantic barrels in the Atlantic
  • With freight surging, short-haul North Sea cargoes into NWE outcompeted long-haul delivered crude; Dated vs M2 at +$19.19/bbl prices that location premium

SOMETHING TO WATCH

  • Front CFDs as the Gulf-recovery tell:
    • Observation: Gulf exports recovered late in the month and Dated vs M2 eased from $28.60 to $21.15/bbl, but CFD W1-W2 closed at +$5.97/bbl
    • Why it matters: sustained Gulf flows return competing barrels to European refiners and remove the location premium; the unwind shows first in W1-W2 and Dated vs Strip
    • What to monitor: daily W1-W2 close vs +$3.31/bbl; Hormuz transits
  • WTI Houston vs Dated at -$28.15/bbl:
    • Observation: the arb is wide on paper while Midland CIF Rotterdam holds +$2.27/bbl over Dated (30-Sep)
    • Why it matters: if freight eases while the discount holds, Midland arrivals rise and pull Dated lower via the cheapest-cargo mechanic
    • What to monitor: Midland CIF Rotterdam vs Dated moving toward zero; US Gulf-Europe freight
  • Johan Sverdrup's sour premium:
    • Observation: Johan Sverdrup closed at +$16.36/bbl to the Strip after the +$23.775/bbl peak, below Oseberg at +$18.75/bbl
    • Why it matters: Johan Sverdrup is the cleanest read on European sour value; the premium holds while Gulf medium sour stays stranded
    • What to monitor: the Johan Sverdrup vs Oseberg gap to the Strip; Johan Sverdrup loadings
